Twice in 2014 Senator Frist traveled to Cuba to as part of healthcare delegations to learn more about the country as a whole and its healthcare system in particular on a “people-to-people” trip. While there he was struck by Cuba’s heterogeneity and chaos: an amalgam of cultures, colors, tastes, and textures. He was particularly impressed with the art and artists in Cuba. In terms of healthcare, the country’s primary care system built around local, community doctors was noteworthy, especially for its emphasis on early intervention.
