By Jenny Eaton Dyer, PhD
This past week, our Executive Director, Jenny Eaton Dyer, PhD, visited Port au Prince, Haiti with CARE. HTHH and CARE will partner to lead a bi-partisan delegation of celebrities, philanthropists, and thought leaders predominately from the faith community this fall with the leadership of Senator Bill Frist, M.D. to Haiti. The goal of the trip is to showcase development programs focused on maternal and child health among various NGOs, faith-based organizations, and government. The current maternal mortality rate in Haiti is very high at about 350/100,000.
On this current trip, Robert Roche, Director of CARE’s Learning Tours, Kamille Gardner, Program Officer of CARE’s Learning Tours, and Dyer led an advance trip to meet with numerous organizations in Port-au-Prince to understand the successes and challenges of health care, particularly for mothers and children, in Port-au-Prince and beyond.
Pictured, Dyer, Gardner, and Roche speak with Naomie Beaujour who works with J/P HRO. For this particular group, they found a robust program serving communities in Port-au-Prince with a school of hope, community learning center, clinic, and mothers club to provide education on a variety of health issues, including the 1,000 days period for mothers, as well as the healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies.
We look forward to sharing our trip with you this fall with influential leaders.
